about
8th June 2023 - today marks the anniversary of the Newton Rebellion in 1607. Over 1000 people had gathered in protest at the enclosure of common land by Thomas Tresham of Newton. On the orders of James I, Sir Edward Montagu was charged with enforcement of a Royal Proclamation that demanded the protesters disperse...50 people were slain by the force employed by Montagu.
I wrote In The Shadow Of Boughton House last Summer in the aftermath of a protest at Kettering Council Offices, where elected councillors passed an application that would allow the Duke of Buccleuch (decendant of Sir Edward Montagu) to sell what was once common land for commercial development (warehousing).
In The Shadow Of Boughton House is dedicated to all of those who protest, past and present and future.
